Weather stations feed

Weather stations provide useful information about the weather, and can help to predict the weather. Barometers / hygrometers are common features of weather stations, in addition to temperature gauges.

All about Barometers
Barometers are pretty simple tools design-wise but are very useful weather instruments. A barometer generally measures the atmospheric pressure in a certain area. The atmospheric pressure has great implications when predicting weather conditions. There are numerous designs and types when it comes to barometers. Each type and design has its own advantage and disadvantages. The type of barometer to use usually depends on the level of accuracy needed for the job.

Fluid Type Barometers
The earliest and the simplest type of barometer available are the fluid type barometers. There are two variations of this type. One is the water-based barometer, and the other is the mercury barometer. The water-based barometer is less accurate compared to the mercury type barometer. Homemade water-based barometer sometimes lacks the scale that is necessary to observe an accurate atmospheric pressure reading. But still, the water-based barometer is very useful, especially in predicting an incoming storm. The mercury barometer is the most commonly used type, mainly because it is cheap and relatively easy to create and use. It is not advisable though to construct a mercury barometer at home due to the lethal characteristics of mercury. The mercury barometer has certain graduation by which an observer could basically measure atmospheric pressure more accurately. The graduation or scale on a mercury barometer could either be measure in Torr (English system) or atm (SI system). Both measurements rely on the measurement of the mercuric column in the barometer.

Aneroid Barometers
Aneroid barometers are the most modern and most accurate type of barometers. Rather than using pressure-sensitive fluids to rise and fall on a vertical column, the aneroid barometer uses pressure-sensitive metal coils. These coils are attached to a dial similar to a clock, which turns and points to graduations surrounding the face of the aneroid barometer. The aneroid barometer is, by far, the most accurate barometer ever designed. The aneroid barometer could measure varying air pressure by a matter of seconds. Another instrument was designed relative to the aneroid barometer to measure and record the changes in atmospheric pressure relative to time, and this is called a barograph. A barograph has a needle attached to a pen which records the changes in pressure on a rolling spool of paper. It uses the same mechanism as the aneroid barometer in getting the atmospheric pressure, but barograph moves more freely compared to the aneroid barometer, and its needle moves up and down to record the changes in pressure on the paper drum.
