Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is a global reference point for time, due largely to Britain's naval power in the 18th century. British sailors used accurate chronometers set to GMT as a reference point and mariners from other nations followed suit as a way of calculating longitude away from the GMT meridian. British Summer Time was introduced in 1916, and helped to save coal for the war effort.
