Should the clocks go back each year? The government has been asked to look at not turning the clocks back at the end of summer, and move UK time permanently forward, bringing country into line with the rest of Europe instead of plunging us into darkness early evening every autumn. The proponents of this move argue that roads would be safer in the evening with longer brighter evenings. Also, the argument goes that the nation would be healthier encouraging more health activities, and cut energy bills. Road deaths would be reduced by perhaps 100 a year and save the NHS £138 million with reduced car accidents. This would be unpopular in Scotland however, as winter mornings would be darker if they switched also - but it would not be all bad in Scotland as the skiing season hours would be extended.
